Kid Talk
From the Spring 2003 Newsletter

Earlier this spring during his visiting week, one of our newest students told his mom that one of the reasons he wanted to attend DVS was because the kids he met at DVS were the smartest kids he had ever met anywhere.

Once again, wisdom from the mouths of babes. All too often, educators in traditional schools forget they are surrounded by so many smart people in their classrooms and their schools. The only smart people thought to be at schools are the adults (though not always, according to the students), the A+ students, and the nerds and geeks.

Everything else that makes up education - tests, curriculum, uniforms, bells, and too many other things - has gotten in the way of what really matters: the idea that no matter our ages or backgrounds, we are all unique individuals, creative, passionate, and intelligent in our own right. That new student saw his fellow students for who they are, not who we think they should be, or who we want them to become.

Diablo Valley School admits students of any race, color, sex, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin to all rights and privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students and staff at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan program, and athletic and other school administered programs.

Our school has enrolled students from: Antioch, Berkeley, Clayton, Concord, Danville, El Cerrito, Lafayette, Livermore, Martinez, Oakland, Oakley, Pittsburg, Pleasant Hill, San Francisco, San Leandro, Vallejo, Walnut Creek and other communities in the Bay Area.
